During the Crusades in the 12th century, the Knights Templar were a military and religious order formed to guard pilgrims, and defend holy places in the Holy Land. They became affluent and powerful. The Knights Templar first arrived in England in 1128. When the order’s founder and Grand Master. French nobleman Hughes de Payens, came to collect troops and money for the Crusades.

The Templars were awarded land all over England, thus, including some at Castle Baynard on the River Fleet, by King Henry VIII. They constructed a wall around the church.
